Yellow Peril
Chapter 4: Epic of War
The title Yellow Peril refers to a term that was historically used to incite fear and xenophobia towards people of East Asian descent, particularly during the period of Japanese imperialist expansion and rapid industrial and economic growth in the lead up to World War II. The piece reflects the racial prejudice and fear that led to the unjust treatment of Japanese Canadians, who were forcibly relocated and interned in camps.
Composed as part of the ‘special performance’ series, Yellow Peril is a Taiko ensemble piece that utilizes layered rhythms to evoke a growing sense of dread, fear, tension, and uncertainty. This is not a festive piece; it is intended for special stage performances, not for festivals. Through its ominous rhythms, Yellow Peril captures the atmosphere of uncertainty and the traumatic experiences faced by Japanese Canadians during this dark chapter in history.
